The International Symposium on Space Mission Operations and Ground Data Systems aims to foster technical interchange on all aspects of Space Mission Operations and Ground Data Systems, and to promote an international community of Space Mission Operations expertise.
The theme of this year's Symposium is: "Global Operations for the next Century".
The Symposium begins on the afternoon of Monday 16th September 96, with registration in the morning and ends on Friday, 20th September at noon.
The opening Plenary Session at the "Gasteig" includes addresses by:
Special Guest: Astronaut Thomas Reiter (t.b.c.)
Sessions of contributed papers will be held at the "Forum der Technik" on the following topics:
The principal goals of Operations Management are to ensure that the mission objectives are achieved, to maximise mission product return and to minimise operations costs. This track addresses the approach being adopted to operations management for the pre- and post-launch phases of current missions and looks at innovative concepts for the future.
This track covers all engineering aspects of Ground Segment Implementation and the resulting hardware, software and network architectures. Emphasis is on novel concepts and innovation in architectures, technology and methodology.
Mission Planning, as a key function of mission operations, provides for efficient usage of all spacecraft resources. This track focuses on Mission Planning systems, software components and concepts for (unmanned) earth observation missions as well as for the (manned) Space Station Programme.
All aspects of Mission Control and Mission Product Processing are treated with particular emphasis on future plans and innovative approaches.
Due to the high costs associated with developing and testing the Ground Segment, the importance of this topic is steadily increasing. This track covers all aspects of Simulation and Modelling with particular reference to cost-saving approaches.
Space agencies are facing the challenge of improving the operation efficiency and satellite autonomy. Operations Automation may be the best answer to this issue. This track focuses on methods and tools, especially with respect to lessons learnt.
Standards promote cost saving developments and operations of compatible and interoperable space/ground systems. This track focuses on standards development and practices in the various domains of data systems interfaces, commonalities and reusability, in terms of design, techniques, equipment, software and procedures.
The space community is under very strong pressure to cut costs. This must, however, be done not to the detriment of quality and safety of space missions. This track presents how this challenge is currently undertaken by both industry and space organizations.
This track focuses on lessons learnt from experience in the mission operations domain, including development of ground facilities and other operations preparation activities, the conduct of operations proper, and all post operational activities.
A printed compilation of abstracts of the papers will be included in the registration package. The package also includes a CD-ROM with the conference proceedings. A limited number of printed copies of the proceedings can be ordered during the symposium on payment of DM 50,- and will be delivered 10-12 weeks after the symposium.
The Foyer of the "Forum der Technik" is available not only for coffee breaks and informal discussions but also serves as the exhibition area where we expect some 20 space-oriented companies to present their newest products.
SpaceOps 96 will be held September 16-20, 1996, with registration starting 10.00 a.m. on the 16th at the Foyer of the "Forum der Technik".
