About SpaceOps

The International Symposium on Space Mission Operations and Ground Data Systems aims to foster technical interchange on all aspects of Space Mission Operations and Ground Data Systems, and to promote an international community of Space Mission Operations expertise.

The theme of this year's symposium is: "Global Operations for the Next Century".

Technical Presentations

Track 1: Operations Management

The principal goals of Operations Management are to ensure that the mission objectives are achieved, to maximise mission product return and to minimise operations costs. This track addresses the approach being adopted to operations management for the pre- and post-launch phases of current missions and looks at innovative concepts for the future.

Track 2: Ground Segment Engineering and Architectures

This track covers all engineering aspects of Ground Segment Implementation and the resulting hardware, software and network architectures. Emphasis is on novel concepts and innovation in architectures, technology and methodology.

Track 3: Mission Planning

Mission Planning, as a key function of mission operations, provides for efficient usage of all spacecraft resources. This track focuses on Mission Planning systems, software components and concepts for (unmanned) earth observation missions as well as for the (manned) Space Station Programme.

Track 4: Mission Control and Mission Product Processing

All aspects of Mission Control and Mission Product Processing are treated with particular emphasis on future plans and innovative approaches.

Track 5: Simulation and Modelling

Due to the high costs associated with developing and testing the Ground Segment, the importance of this topic is steadily increasing. This track covers all aspects of Simulation and Modelling with particular reference to cost-saving approaches.

Track 6: Operations Automation

Space agencies are facing the challenge of improving the operation efficiency and satellite autonomy. Operations Automation may be the best answer to this issue. This track focuses on methods and tools, especially with respect to lessons learnt.

Track 7: Standardisation

Standards promote cost saving developments and operations of compatible and interoperable space/ground systems. This track focuses on standards development and practices in the various domains of data systems interfaces, commonalities and reusability, in terms of design, techniques, equipment, software and procedures.

Track 8: Cost Efficient Operations

The space community is under very strong pressure to cut costs. This must, however, be done not to the detriment of quality and safety of space missions. This track presents how this challenge is currently undertaken by both industry and space organisations.

Track 9: Experience from Current or Recent Missions

This track focuses on lessons learnt from experience in the mission operations domain, including development of ground facilities and other operations preparation activities, the conduct of operations proper, and all post operational activities.

Social Events

Ice-Breaker Reception

An informal buffet-reception will be held in the Forum der Technik immediately after the Plenary Session on Monday afternoon. It is intended that this event will allow participants to get to know each other and provide an opportunity for last-minute discussions between Authors and Track Managers.

Reception at the Deutsches Museum

In the Space Gallery of the Deutsches Museum a more formal reception will be held on Wednesday evening, for which the symposium participants and spouses are kindly invited. This event in the surroundings of the history of satellite development combined with the "Gourmet"-Buffet will be one of the highlights of SpaceOps96.

Bavarian Evening

Since the symposium is held the week before the Oktoberfest a gala dinner at the famous Löwenbräukeller" will be organised with typical Bavarian specialities, the best beer in the world and the traditional "ompah-"music on Thursday evening.

Presentations at IMAX and Planetarium

One of the newest space-related IMAX films will be shown.

Spectacular video and slide projections, colourful laser shows, computer animations and exciting space music fill the dome of the Planetarium carrying the visitor into a magic night sky.
