The COBUCO Project
The COrdless BUsiness COmmunication
project promises to be a cordless system intended for business environments.
The COBUCO project aims to design, develop and experiment with
an UMTS demonstrator system using state-of-the-art DECT and ATM technology and offering cordless
and fixed multimedia and multirate services to the private business environment. COBUCO focuses on the business
environment as one of the most important pan Europeanmarket segments for the introduction of UMTS. Planned
services available form COBUCO include telephony, video telephony, fax,electronic mail, file transfer and terminal emulation.
The main
objectives of the COBUCO project are:
- to build an ATM/DECT based UMTS system demonstrator offering
both cordless and fixed access;
- to conduct tests, expermients and user assessments to validate
the UMTS concepts and to demonstrate the usability of UMTS multimedia/multirate services and applications
in a business environment;
- to introduce UMTS features by exploiting capabilites of already
existing DECT and ATM standards and to include terminal, network and personal mobility;
- to build a series of UMTS cells by extending an existing DECT
system, to link theses cells into one mobile island and subsequently link islands into an integrated fixed and mobile
network;
- to investigate critical transmission and signalling aspects
in particular with respect to the UMTS features;
- to contribute to the UPT/UMTS standardisation.
The main contributions of the DLR to the COBUCO project are in the fields:
- Service & Traffic Characterisation
- Channel Modelling and Simulation
- DECT Slot Management
- Quality of Service &, Network Performance
